ECO²SCAPE offers excursions to the biosphere reserves involved in the project to allow for the exchange between farmers. Last year, we went to the Saxon Biosphere Reserve Oberlausitzer Heide- und Teichlandschaft for a “peer-to-peer” exchange; in June 2023 we visited the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve in Mecklenburg Pomerania. There, the head of department Ms. Gebhard and her colleague Dr. Kuczyk, insect conservation manager from the BROMMI project, provided diverse insights into the interaction between nature conservation and agriculture. At the excursion points, agricultural and partly also municipal partners of the biosphere reserve administration were present. They were able to report from their own experiences and demonstrated that protection measures on agricultural land are a benefit for all. In addition to the topics of extensive grazing and insect conservation, the topic of hedges was discussed from various perspectives. The practical experiences were able to illustrate that hedges with their valuable, diverse characteristics can be practicable structural elements on and between agricultural areas for the protection of biodiversity and ecosystem services.
